In
January 2007 I was once again thinking about remastering the original
Sleep & Poetry album and this time I started right away. It
was really fun, listening to the old digital master tapes and tweaking
them with the help of some tube simulating software to make them
sound a bit more analogue again, as they originally had been on
the 24-track master tape. I also edited some of the song´s
beginnings and endings and finally altered the playing order, mainly
because of 2 new tracks:
"The Traveller" was originally intended to be on the
album but then didn´t made it, due to time and money problems.
After the CD was released, I could finish this song, but only a
shortened version was later put on a compilation album.
Here is now the complete mix for the first time released in full
length.
"Drifting Monsters (Reprise)" was a side take of mixing
the original song. With a new bass-line added and some different
athmosperic background guitars, it was a bit more "Massive
Attack"-stylish with the delicate girls' voices hovering above
the music. This track was later only used for promotional purpose
and is also released for the first time.
With these two additional songs I could happily drop "Red
Sails Into Dusk", the last track on the original album, which,
I have to admit, always had been a bit of a filler (being an backwards
played outtake from "Reading, Writing...").
To me this new release is in a way the "real" Sleep &
Poetry album - it sounds much better than the old one and the tracklisting
is now as it should have been back then, if all the recorded songs
would have been at hand. |
