Rain
On Bamboo was founded in 1992 by Ingo
Ito as an open band project with varying musicians.
After the basically pop-orientated music of Bamboo Industry, Rain
On Bamboo shifted to a different, rather "avantgardish"
style of music and the tracks for their first album "Sleep
& Poetry" were influenced by artists like Brian Eno, King
Crimson, David Sylvian or Ryuichi Sakamoto.
There was much space for improvisational performances
within the loose framework of the songs and that can be heard throughout
the whole album, especially in songs like "Viking",
"Painted
By Eisen" or "Reading,
Writing And Tying Poem-Slips To Bamboo".
The lyrics of Ingo Ito were influenced by romantic poets like P.B.
Shelley or John Keats as well as by stories of Rudyard Kipling and
the recording approach to the whole album was regarded as a piece
of art in itself with the music painting a colourful picture for
the listener´s own imagination.
The contributions of the musicians were a
vital part in this concept and luckily the whole studio sessions
had a playful and free of bounds athmosphere for everybody.
Although the album was released on CD in 1994
and did quite well in the shops and radio, there was unfortunately
not enough money at hand to do a tour or at least some concerts.
Besides, the musicians had already started new projects soon after
the end of the recording session - like Gabriel
Le Mar, who founded his own projects, the Saafi Brothers and
Aural Float, or Hans
Schumann (Flucht nach Vorn, Mad Romeo), who joined the Geschwister
Pfister team. Saxophone player Lorenz
Allacher joined the german band Rosenstolz for live concerts
and Susa
Lie started to work as an editor for visual effects in film.
Ingo Ito was doing the "Bodega Bohemia" recordings in
Brussels with the german synth-band Camouflage
and the pre-recoding work for Camouflage´s next album "Spice
Crackers".
There were only two Rain On Bamboo public
appearances. The first one was a full playback performance on Deutschewelle-TV
in Berlin and the second one a stage performance at a rather dubious
music-festival in the Ukraine. For this half-playback presentation
Ingo Ito was joined by bass player Susa Lie and Camouflage´s
Heiko
Maile on keyboards.
Rain On Bamboo´s 2nd album "Suburban
Skirmish" was nearly completely recorded by Ingo Ito on his
own as a multitrack studio album, due to the lack of time of the
originally wanted fellow musicians.
Only the basic recordings for two songs were recorded as a three-piece
band with Ito on guitar, drummer Sven Küster (Legendary Golden
Vampires, Space Kelly) and bass player Lisa
Wicklund (7th Heaven, Kuusimäki).
The album was completed in Hamburg at the
Camouflage studio and Heiko Maile added some sounds from his famous
old-fashioned synthesizer collection.
The songs were about the little stories you
can often read on the final page of a newspaper - stories about
serial killers, sex-maniacs, legendary (but meanwhile forgotten)
movie actors, VooDoo priests and so on.
"Suburban Skirmish" was released on CD in 1996, but didn´t
caught as much attention in the press and with the audience as "Sleep
& Poetry" had done.
In 1997 the whole project was closed. 10 years
later In 2007 Ingo Ito did a re-mastering of "Sleep & Poetry".
Two other songs were added and the overall sound was improved, making
it an album still worthwhile listening to.
You´ll find more information about Rain
On Bamboo "Sleep & Poetry (Remastered)" here.
There will be more Remixes of the 2nd album
Suburban Skirmish done later this year and eventually a Remix album
will be available.
The first release of these Remix songs called
"Some Satellites"
is now available. |
